    The Big Easy is a city of tradition, and though
    it has a strong culinary history - and perhaps the only indigenous cooking style in the US - there
    can be a little repetition in its menus.

    There's only so much gumbo, jambalaya and turtle soup
    one person can eat, after all.

    So here is our pick of the new restaurants bucking the trend, and offering
    a life-spicing variety:



    Big eats in the Big Easy: New Orleans has a thriving foodie scene


    SoBou
    Commanders Palace has long been the dominant name in NOLA restaurants, so the
    opening of a new outpost of theirs - this one in the W French Quarter Hotel - will always cause a stir.
    Chef Juan Carlos Gonzales has come up with a menu that is excitingly affordable, and casual diners will be rewarded
    for venturing in. Oyster tacos, foie gras burgers and Cuban sandwiches are all presented in original ways, and the prices mean you can delve deep into
    the menu. Couple this with the fantastic drinks selection, headed up
    by bartending bombshell Abigail Gullo, and an impressive new interior and
    you're left with almost no reasons not to check in here.

    Serendipity
    Chef Chris de Barr is one of the most approachable, witty and playful
    cooks in town, and his new venture is no different.
    De Barr brings the world to your table, food with tales of historic
    journeys and international escapades. Travel to Niigata in Japan or southern Italy just via the
    appetisers menu. The mains cover worlds from Malaysian curry
    (in an empanada) to Greek tacos. Trust me, it works.
    Consistently one of the most exciting chefs in town, there are great things ahead
    here.

    Root
    The warehouse district can be quite the neighbourhood for foodies, and there's
    reason to be excited by this addition. Chef Phillip Lopez wants to tell stories through his food,
    getting people to share and communicate via the dishes.
    Hence a good number of sharing plates, with incredible pâtés,
    cold cuts and relishes. If you like rich food, the menage à foie is a daily-prepared
    party of three variations of foie gras. Cohiba
    smoked scallops are encrusted in chorizo dust and
    served in a cigar box. The food is seriously playful, without being pretentious.
    It's hard to imagine a dinner menu with more talking points.

    BIG SLEEPS IN THE BIG EASY: WHERE TO STAY



    A new hotel complements these restaurants with aplomb.


    The Hotel Mazarin is a new addition to the boutique portfolio of the French Quarter, impeccably located and seamlessly elegant.



    It has arguable the Quarter's most scenic courtyard,
    and the rooms mix generous proportions with design touches such as marble floors,
    period furniture and hi-tech amenities.

    For a sophisticated base for your culinary expedition into New Orleans, the Mazarin ticks all the boxes.

    Saint Lawrence
    A beacon of gourmet delight in the otherwise lean streets of New Orleans, this narrow bolthole (named after
    the patron saint of chefs) is offering discerning visitors respite among the daiquiri
    and gift shops of Upper Decatur. It's bar food, but not as we know it, with even basics such as wings being delivered in a
    homey pepper glaze and burgers that promise a ‘three-bird
    trinity'.

    Chef Caleb Cook is offering you a simple but thoughtful interpretation of bar classics, and the pleasingly
    crumbly décor and pseudo-religious local artwork all come together nicely.

    R'evolution
    The upper echelons of New Orleans restaurants have enjoyed some time undisturbed by newcomers, but this opening in the Royal Sonesta Hotel is
    a double assault from chefs John Folse and Rick Tramonto
    and you can sense the big players eyeing them nervously.


    The dining room is a lesson in sophistication, from the inordinately polite staff to the wine
    list, presented as it is on its own personal iPad.


    The menu is New Orleanian to its core, but presented with cheeky fanciness, such as the ‘Tale
    of Three Fishes' and the piece-de-resistance ‘Bird in a Cage', a guinea
    fowl serve up in a caraway dungeon. An outstanding wine list
    and stories surrounding you in the murals make for a refreshing high-end dining experience.

    A Slavic soul food kitchen in the back of a music
    venue isn't the most obvious place to find some of the city's best new food, but venture to the back of Siberia to the serving
    hatch and your curiosity will be met with the town's best kept secret.
    Chef Matt Ribachonek has this food in his blood, and if you ever
    want to experience what one man can do with beetroot,
    then I urge you to eat here - the beet burger is a near-religious experience.
    As well as this, you have peirogi and east-European takes on local classics, such as the
    Pol-boy, a Polish version of the famed sandwich.
    Cheap. Tasty as all heck. Not to be missed.
