In the early 1980s, a Luton Town fan called Tommy Robinson formed a football hooligan ‘firm' called
the MIGs, an acronym of ‘Men In Gear'. As their name suggests, they
dressed in designer clothes and trainers but in every other respect they were unreconstructed thugs.

Robinson's ambition was to gain the respect of better-known firms that followed
the big clubs, such as West Ham's Inter City Firm, Arsenal's
The Herd and Leicester City's notorious Baby Squad.

This aim was achieved in March 1985 when the MIGs
got involved in one of the most shameful nights of violence
in the history of the game. When Millwall arrived in town to take on Luton in the sixth round
of the FA Cup, it was accompanied by The Bushwackers, its fearsome lunatic fringe.

When the visitors lost 1-0, these hooligans rampaged across the
Kenilworth Road pitch, hurling seats and golf balls at the police
and one of them even threw a knife at the home team's goalkeeper Les Sealey.

Then the mayhem spilled over into Bury Park - the area of town which was home to most of Luton's immigrant population - where
the rival firms engaged in an orgy of destruction, smashing windows
    and terrifying residents.

The Guardian later described it as ‘a night
football died a slow death'. Given this background, you might think that no sane and reasonable person would choose to be associated with the founder of the MIGs.

But when Luton fan Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who was born in the same year
the firm was established, wanted to reinvent himself,
it was Tommy Robinson's name that he adopted. In many ways, this tells you
everything you need to know about a man who turned his back on a
promising career as an aircraft engineer to embrace a life
of petty crime and race-based agitation.

But this month, Robinson - who is currently serving
an 18-month prison sentence for contempt of court - has been lionised by the world's richest
man, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who shared a post that described him
    as a ‘political prisoner'.

Tommy Robinson turned his back on a promising career as an aircraft engineer to embrace a life
of petty crime and race-based agitation

Robinson is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence for
    contempt of court

Musk asked on his social media platform X: ‘Why is Tommy Robinson in a solitary confinement prison for telling the truth?
He should be freed and those who covered up this travesty
should take his place in that cell.'

In total, the four comments naming Robinson which Musk posted this month to
his 211million followers have been seen 186million times,
according to X's own data - more than double the population of
the UK, or the equivalent of almost half of all US citizens.

Musk's endorsement of Robinson even sparked a very public falling-out with Nigel Farage, who
has repeatedly distanced himself from the former leader of the English Defence League
(EDL), an Islamophobic organisation that began life in 2009 as
a Luton-based pressure group before going national.

And Musk is not the only global luminary to have taken up Robinson's cause.

The Canadian academic and culture warrior Dr Jordan Peterson - who has sparked controversy with his views on women, masculinity and gender
identity - has described him as ‘a British journalist
and activist who first became an establishment target after reporting on the grooming gangs in Luton'.
Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon has gone
so far as to call Robinson a ‘hero'.

The truth, of course, is very different. Robinson, 42,
is not in jail because he has offended the Establishment but because he deliberately repeated false claims about a Syrian refugee who
was attacked at a school in Huddersfield in 2018.

Robinson had already been ordered to pay Jamal Hijazi £100,000 in 2021 after he lost a libel case, which heard that he had accused the teenager
of assaulting ‘young English girls' prior to the
incident and threatening to stab a boy.

Unable to stump up the six-figure fine after frittering away tens of thousands of pounds on gambling and ‘partying', while continuing to solicit ‘donations'
from his thousands of supporters, Robinson declared himself bankrupt.

Elon Musk shared a post describing the EDL founder as a 'political
    prisoner'

Robinson has been backed by figures such as former Trump strategist Steve
Bannon, who called him a 'hero'

The judge had also ordered Robinson not to repeat his false
allegations and when he did just that by broadcasting a ‘documentary' about the case, entitled Silenced, at a demonstration in Trafalgar Square last summer, he was ordered back to court.

Jailing him in October, Judge Mr Justice Johnson told Robinson: ‘Nobody is above the law.'

He now languishes in the high security HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes where he is
known as prisoner number A2084CG and is segregated from the
general prison population for his own protection. It's not the first time inside for this former football hooligan and
British National Party member, of course.

In addition to his current incarceration, Robinson served four
prison terms between 2004 and 2019. Even when he
attempted to reinvent himself as a property developer, he ended up behind bars for mortgage
    fraud.

It was only when this serial shapeshifter turned to
political activism full-time - taking advantage of the fact that in 2023 he was allowed
back on social media after being banned - that he struck gold.
Robinson, who had gained an unsavoury reputation via his activities with the EDL, moderated his pitch.

The designer clothes, tattooed forearm and angry grimace remained but his constant postings
suddenly meant he was being feted by academics and intellectuals who
revelled in the presence of a man described by Jordan Peterson as maybe
‘the most controversial person in the Western world'.
He became a regular guest at political talking shops on both sides of the Atlantic.

And who was it who paved the way for his reappearance
on social media after he had been banned from Twitter for breaching rules on hate speech in 2018, with Facebook and Instagram
following suit a year later? Why, no other than Musk, who describes himself as a ‘free speech absolutist'.

After he completed his £34.2billion takeover of Twitter
    - later renaming it X - in October 2022, Musk reinstated a
number of accounts. In November of that year, Dr Peterson,
who now boasts almost six million followers, was reinstated, followed - a year later - by Robinson.

The 42-year-old is a former BNP member and football hooligan

But it was not until last summer that Robinson returned fully to the limelight with a vengeance when he was accused of stoking hate following
the murder of three girls in Southport.

As riots spread across the UK, Robinson posted 268 comments that
were seen more than 160million times.

But it is the unlikely bromance between Robinson and Dr
Peterson that is thought to have attracted Musk's
    attention.

In June last year, before he was jailed, Robinson was a guest on Dr
Peterson's podcast, which boasts more than eight million subscribers.
The episode was called: ‘Why the Establishment hates
    this man: Tommy Robinson.'

In it, Robinson described how a relative was raped at 14 by
‘gangs of bearded men in the Muslim community' and claimed that
    the police ‘did nothing'.

This experience, Robinson said, set him on the path of campaigning
against Muslim grooming gangs, a cause which was largely vindicated when media reports began to reveal from 2010 onwards
the widespread abuse of white girls by men of predominately Asian origin.

In North America, where the public is less aware of the intricacies of
Robinson's previous run-ins with the law, his online rhetoric and claims
of ‘cover-ups' and ‘corruption' are largely taken at
face value by an alt-Right movement which, as seen during the Covid-19 pandemic, is highly susceptible
    to conspiracy theories.

Perhaps buoyed by his endorsements from Musk, Dr Peterson and Bannon, Robinson has received financial
backing from, among other sources, the US-based Middle East Forum, which describes itself as ‘working to protect Western civilisation from the threat of Islamism' and he has a number of wealthy US backers.

Robinson returned to the limelight last summer following
    the Southport stabbings

His film about the Syrian schoolboy was funded by Infowars, an American news website run by conspiracy theorist and radio host Alex Jones, a court has previously been told.

He has also recently thanked Ezra Levant, the Canadian founder of the alt-Right
outlet Rebel News, for assisting with his legal battles.

One of Robinson's primary sources of income, however, is understood to be generated by the ‘independent journalism' brand Urban Scoop,
through which he solicits donations and sells his
    books.

HMRC is understood to be checking whether all the transactions Robinson has received are donations
    rather than payments for services.

Donations are tax-free but, if he was being paid to make a video or a
speech, that would count as income and be
    subject to tax.

In August, Robinson appeared for a second time on Dr Peterson's podcast.

During a lengthy discussion, the host questioned
Robinson about his criminal record, allowing him to insist - unchecked
    - that he had not, in fact, committed the mortgage fraud.

Robinson claimed he had pleaded guilty as part of a ‘plea deal' to prevent his wife and brother-in-law from having to stand trial.

But his most controversial media appearance came earlier this month,
when an audio recording was released of an interview conducted by phone in which he
detailed elements of his life inside. The Prison Service has launched an investigation into its release as serving prisoners are not permitted to speak to journalists without the approval of
    the prison governor.

His film about the Syrian schoolboy was funded by Infowars,
an American news website run by conspiracy theorist and radio host Alex Jones, a court has previously been told

It is understood that while the number Robinson called was on an approved list, the authorities were not aware the conversation would form the basis of an interview.

The resulting 13-minute clip - which begins with Robinson addressing the person on the other end of the
phone as ‘darling' before he says he wants to ‘get something off my
chest' - consists of him railing against his ‘solitary confinement' and the ‘injustice' of his 18-month prison sentence.

Robinson says he is locked up for 21 hours each day, only
leaving to use the gym - alone - where he runs or
cycles for an hour, before a 40-minute walk within the exercise yard.

‘This shouldn't be happening. It's mental torture,' he said.
‘I don't want everyone to feel sorry. I'm just pointing out
the hypocrisy of it. What amounts to mental torture is being inflicted on a journalist because he made a film.'

A prison source insists there is no such thing as solitary confinement in British prisons but, as we have seen, it appears that Robinson is
being segregated for his own protection.

Around 40 per cent of prisoners at HMP Woodhill are Muslim,
a recent report revealed, which puts Robinson at risk.
Fellow prisoners include Michael Adebolajo, who is serving a whole-life term for the murder of soldier Lee Rigby, and Britain's ‘most
violent' prisoner Charles Bronson. In last week's recording, Robinson also praised
Musk, adding: ‘Free speech is the hill I will die on.'

But his previous dealings with people who delve into
his activities show he is often not as unalloyed a champion of
free speech as he would have us believe. In 2021, Lizzie Dearden, then a journalist with The
Independent, launched an investigation into allegations
that Robinson was misusing thousands of pounds of supporters' funds.
Court papers show that, when she contacted Robinson for comment via his solicitor,
he responded by hiring a private investigator to obtain her address and visited
her home at 10pm on a Sunday evening.

He continuously rang the buzzer while shouting ‘F**k you,
Lizzie' as another man beeped a car horn. Robinson also
claimed to neighbours that Ms Dearden's partner was a paedophile, court documents show,
and threatened to come back ‘every night'.

In an email the following day, he repeated the claim in an attempt to
stop the article being published. When his harassment landed
him in court, the judge imposed a five-year stalking protection order, saying: ‘Publication of the
story was delayed on the basis of safety concerns by
the newspaper editors. Ms Dearden states that she felt extremely shaken, distressed and unsafe
    and frightened to go outside.'

In another intimidating incident, Robinson sent associates to
the property of a journalist who had written an article which angered him and they took photographs
    of his family.

‘I felt intimidated and scared for my family,' the reporter said.
‘There's a lot more to him than people like Elon Musk seem to think.
He is being held up as a bastion of free speech but he's not.
    He's a loose cannon.'

The depressing aspect of Robinson's back story
is that it began so promisingly. As a child,
Stephen Yaxley-Lennon achieved 11 A-C GCSE grades before leaving school at 16 to work as an apprentice aircraft engineer at Luton Airport.
He has since claimed that there were 600 applications
    for just four positions.

He appears to have worked there diligently for five years before going off the rails.

He was fired after being jailed for 12 months in 2004 for assaulting an off-duty police officer.
It proved to be only the first of many brushes with the
law. In 2011, he received a 12-month community
order for his part in a mass football brawl.

In January 2013, he was jailed for ten months for travelling to the US on someone else's passport to
speak at an event in New York, despite knowing he was banned from entering the country.

The following year, he was given that sentence for mortgage fraud, which the court heard earned him £160,
    000 over a six-month period.

In 2019, he was jailed again after he almost caused the collapse of a grooming trial when he
posted a video of the defendants live to Facebook
while proceedings were active and encouraged ‘vigilante action'.

Robinson, who was found guilty of contempt of court, attended his hearing wearing a T-shirt that read:
    ‘Convicted of journalism'.

Even while locked up, his ideology continues to be promoted, mostly via an ‘admin team' monitoring his
X account and posting regularly to his 1.2 million followers.

Robinson's team are now organising a march in central London on February 1 to protest against his continued segregation.

In a post yesterday on X promoting the demonstration, his ‘admin'
team wrote: ‘Free all political prisoners'.
Pinned to the top of his profile was the documentary that ultimately had him sent to
    prison.

As the judge at his last sentencing hearing remarked, nobody is above the law.

But it would seem this long-time rabble rouser, and his army of supporters, disagree.
